Inside every hutch is a newborn calf separated from their mother. #regram @weanimals
In the scorching Arizona summer, We Animals Media photojournalist Ram Daya documented the alarming expansion of the state’s animal agriculture.
This dairy farm (Turkey Creek Dairy), originally a family farm, now accommodates up to 130,000 heifers and cows and 17,000 hutches for calves, reflecting its growth into an investor-funded corporation.
Mirroring practices our photojournalists have documented on other dairy farms around the globe, calves were immediately separated from their mothers at birth and kept in hutches for up to ninety days. Male calves and some females designated for the beef and veal market are sold within a few days of birth. Other female calves will be used for milk production in Arizona or shipped to company-owned dairy farms in other states.
Their mother’s milk, intended for them, is sold for human consumption.

🌎🐋🐋 #regram • @nytimes The Return of the Whales to Long Island
As recently as 10 years ago, a whale or dolphin sighting was an uncommon occurrence on the East End of Long Island. The overfishing of Atlantic menhaden had led to a huge drop in marine life off the coast. Since 2012, coastwide catch limits on the fish have led to populations rebounding, improving water quality and bringing more marine animals closer to the beach than they’ve been since the middle of the last century.
That resurgence, often just out of human sight, is fairly new. That is, until @suttonlynch, a photographer who has gained a devoted online following, started documenting this dramatic turning point in the East End’s environmental and cultural history with his drone.

🐘🍼 #regram • @sheldricktrust Mornings with Mzinga, then and now!
This little compilation shows what a difference a year can make. The first clip was taken shortly after Mzinga’s rescue in 2022; the second clip was taken earlier this month. As you can see, our girl has gotten bigger, rounder, and healthier — but her cheeky curiosity remains a constant! As she waits for the Keepers open her stable door in the morning, Mzinga has always enjoyed peeking out and saying hello to any passers-by.
Today, Mzinga is a picture of baby elephant health — but it was a long, challenging road to get her to this point. She struggled a lot after her rescue, and several dips had us fearing the worst. But round-the-clock care — bolstered by Mzinga’s brave, resolute personality — worked its magic, and she is really thriving now.
As one of the smallest orphans in our care, Mzinga’s journey is just beginning — and you can play an important part in it by becoming one of her adopters! To learn more, tap our link in bio or visit:

🦒🤍💦 #regram • @njwight This moment was such a great privilege and one I will not soon forget. It was the middle of the night and I was staying in an underground hide overlooking the waterhole at @lentorrelodge in #Kenya. With their enormous height, drinking requires the #giraffe to adopt such a vulnerable position. Despite their size, they are so graceful in their movements and watching this male was like witnessing a “wild” #ballet. #giraffesofinstagram #tallblonde #waterhole #nightphotography #women_wildlife_photograpy#wildography #wildlifeaddict #wildlifereels #discoverearth #instanature #earthcapture #nature_perfection

🐘🐘🐘🐘 #regram • @sheldricktrust As baby Mwana led the Umani herd into the forest this misty morning, she was all play! Ever the patient ‘grandfather,’ Keeper Adan rewarded her theatrics with an indulgent head pat, while hyper-vigilant nannies Kiasa and Enkesha shadowed her every step.
Mwana’s mother, Murera, is bringing up the rear on this occasion. Motherhood is a milestone for any orphaned elephant, but especially for one who has overcome such enormous odds. Murera was horribly maimed at the hands of humans, and for a long time, we wondered if she would ever walk again. Although she has made an astounding recovery over the past 11 years — thanks in no small part to Keepers like Adan, who worked tirelessly to save her — she will always be physically compromised.
While Murera moves through life at her own pace, she can rest easy knowing that is surrounded by a support system. When baby Mwana wants to forge ahead, as she does here, she will be flanked by her human-elephant family. And wherever we go, we will always wait for Murera, our matriarch, to bring up the rear.
If you haven’t yet read the news about Murera and Mwana, please take a few moments to meet this miracle mum and baby: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/news/updates/murera-baby-mwana

🍼🐘 #regram• @sheldricktrust As Doldol reminds us, falling down is part of life. Getting back up is what counts!
Doldol is no stranger to adversity. Born premature and orphaned shortly thereafter, she is the tiniest elephant we’ve ever rescued. Her mother must have been disturbed during birth and took off, leaving her baby behind.
Her life could have ended just as it began, but supporters like you allowed us to give Doldol a second chance. Now, she has helping hands guiding her (and getting her back to her feet!) every step of the way. To learn more about our ‘miniature miracle,’ tap our link in bio or visit:

🤍🐘 #regram • @r.e.s.c.u.e (3/3) If there ever was a case to be made for “love heals”, this would be it.❤️🩹
As Sitiin got stronger and healthier, she started joining the nursery herd on their daily bush walks (these are naturally much shorter than the bush walks of the intermediate and big herd), but we noticed that she didn’t join the mud baths.
Then one day, around 5 days after her arrival, she walked back through the gate of the boma after her bush walk and walked straight to the mud bath and started splashing water on herself.
The way in which she did it almost seemed as if she had made a conscious decision to step out of her mourning and wash the sorrow away. The more she started splashing, the more you sensed her relief. In the video you can also see the other elephants embracing her - which is so special.
We can’t help but wonder if Sitiin held off on bathing to keep her mum’s smell on her just a little longer? Maybe she wasn’t ready to let go of her just yet, until this day. ❤️🩹
But, as Sitiin shows us, by letting go of sadness, we open our hearts to be filled with love and kindness from those around us. This doesn’t mean Sitiin will ever forget her muma, we know elephants always, always remember.
-
From a gut wrenching rescue not wanting to leave her muma’s body, to seeing how far she has come in just 3 weeks… her recovery can only be attributed to the outpouring of love from keepers, the herd and everyone around the world.

🏙️🍃#regram • @nytimes Coyotes have come to New York City — but not for the pizza.
“Considering the number of potential habitats available to them, we estimate between 20 and 30 coyotes are here in the city,” said Carol Henger, an urban ecologist at Fordham University in New York who studies the animals. The idea of this animal — not a dog, not a wolf, just big enough to be a little unsettling — haunting places like the Bronx makes the wilderness feel a little closer. But it also raises a question: What does a city coyote even eat?
Despite its urban surroundings, a city coyote maintains a surprisingly wild diet, Dr. Henger and her colleagues have learned. Urban and suburban coyotes, the researchers reported last month in the journal PeerJ, eat similar amounts of human food, which does not make up most of their sustenance. Instead, city coyotes eat what they have always eaten: small mammals, plants, bugs and whatever else they can get their paws on. Coyotes may be living in the city, but they are living alongside us — not off our stuff.

🦮🐕🐩🐕🦺🧑💼#regram • @nytimes In defending dogs at all costs, Richard Rosenthal has made a lot of enemies. But his animal clients owe him their lives.
As an animal attorney for more than a decade, Rosenthal takes on custody cases, sues veterinary clinics for malpractice and has made a specialty of defending dangerous dogs. In doing so, he often enrages local officials, animal control officers and district attorneys. But even animal rights groups have expressed frustration with him.
“I’m a hired gun,” Rosenthal said in an interview with The New York Times, acknowledging his reputation as the go-to lawyer to get dogs off death row. “If I take a case, it’s about winning. I take it because I believe in it.”
He allows that it is a tragedy when a dog injures or kills another dog or, worse, a person, but he says all circumstances must be considered before the dog is euthanized.
